ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM WORKSHOP

May 12, 2012 from 9:00am to 12:00pm at The Hearing and Speech Agency in Baltimore, Maryland

Workshop Presented by Lisa L. Weems

Sponsored by The Hearing and Speech Agency and PCRID

Workshop Description: During this three-hour workshop we will examine the theoretical foundation from which decisions are made and how those foundations are shaped by a variety of cultural influences.

Through lecture and hands-on, goal oriented activities, we will examine theories of morality and influences on morality that come from background, culture and ethnicity. Ethical premises will be discussed along with the tenets of professionalism and how those broad concepts relate to interpreting. Participants will learn to differentiate between morality and ethics and apply the theoretical knowledge to interpreting specific situations.

  • Ridesharing Carpool - If you need a ride, or have a ride to share, please make sure to register at the PCRID rideshare website.

Presenters will then recommend a dual processing approach, as an addition to the traditional roles of the support interpreter, and provide an example of dual process teaming.  Participants will have the opportunity to discuss this approach in small groups, and try it in pairs, followed by a discussion of how this approach can be integrated into an interpreter’s repertoire of strategies to use when working in a variety of teamed situations.

VIRTUES AND VICES IN SIGN LANGUAGE WORKSHOP

----->CLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW!

Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Gallaudet University

Workshop presented By Teresa Blankmeyer Burke, Ph.D.

Sponsored by PCRID and the Gallaudet University Regional Interpreter Educational Center (GURIEC)

Workshop Description: Ethics in signed language interpreting is about more than passing a test or following a rulebook. Real life ethical decision-making often requires interpreters to make difficult choices by reasoning through options that involve trade-offs. In this workshop, Dr. Teresa Blankmeyer Burke of Gallaudet University will provide attendees with background on the virtue ethics approach to ethical decision-making, lead interpreters through a discussion of three virtues and their corresponding vices, and offer opportunities to practice this approach through the use of case studies.

Message From, Erin Harrison, PCRID's Member-at-Large for Washington DC

As Member-at-Large (DC) for PCRID, I serve the liaison to the board for the Scholarships and Awards Committee (SAC).  Since my first term in 2010 it has been my pleasure to work with Erica Alley in her role as the Chair of this important committee.  Always diligent and motivated, she conscientiously carried out the mission of SAC, handling donations to the community, scholarships/grants, awards to members, and other duties asked of her.  It is our loss as she moves on to other things after two years of effort, yet our gain as Mish Ktejik, former Vice Chair of SAC, moves to fill her shoes.  I am looking forward to another vital year working with SAC.  Thank you also to former members of SAC - we miss you.  SAC needs the support of the membership, if YOU are interested in serving PCRID's mission of "Giving through Funding," please contact Mish Ktejik at sac@pcrid.net.

President's Message

Farewell from Michael Labadie

Dearest colleagues and friends,

When I first moved to the DC area in January of 2002, I arrived with over twenty years interpreting experience. But none of those years had prepared me for the culture shock of working with so many brilliant, educated deaf people. And I struggled to understand the relationship between them and the interpreting community for some time. It was not like the model I'd known from the Northeast. There, the interpreting community and the deaf community worked in tandem and held each other in high regard.

Now, nearly ten years later, I have come to a deeper understanding; things are complicated. Having engaged in conversation with many interpreters and deaf people here, I am keenly interested in seeing efforts made by PCRID and MDAD, DCAD, and DHHIG to collaborate on issues of educating our constituents as well as the uninformed (or poorly informed) hearing consumers we interact with in Government and other interpreting situations. Your Board this year has made efforts to continue reaching out to the deaf organizations and we are so grateful they wish to engage! Personal thanks to Charm Smith, MDAD President, and David Nelson, DCAD President, and Steve Gagnon, DHHIG President, for our initial discussions. I regret that I will not be here to continue working with you, but I point you to the 2012 PCRID Board who are eager to work with you!
